Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center (PVHMC), a 453-bed not-for-profit medical center in Southern California, recently selected a new solution from Summit Healthcare, deploying the Summit Downtime Reporting System to provide business continuity and data accessibility in the event of electronic medical record (EMR) system or network downtime.
In a move to become more and more digital PVHMC began planning a Soarian® Clinicals (Siemens Healthcare) go live, which was scheduled for October 2012. In mid 2012, PVHMC began evaluating complementary vendor technology offerings that would enable secure, robust access to critical patient data in the event of any type of system downtime. With the go live date approaching and timeline tight, it was important that PVHMC also choose a solution that was turn-key. The Summit Downtime Reporting System is the preferred business continuity solution for Siemens Healthcare and was brought to the attention of PVHMC. In virtually three months, PVHMC was live with Summit DRS to synchronize with their Soarian Clinicals go live.
The Summit Downtime Reporting System provides both clinical and non-clinical users with a snapshot of key information through report generation, sophisticated data encryption and secure delivery tools. PVHMC is currently sending hourly reports to designated downtime machines located through the hospital facility. With more than 44 downtime stations live, these receiving areas include nursing, surgery, intensive care, pediatrics, and the emergency room. Report examples include the medication administration, patient health records, patient census and associate directory reports.
The new Summit DRS4 platform released in May 2012 features a variety of advanced capabilities, including a centralized update system, automatic synchronization between active directory and DRS users, keyword filtering, centralized auditing and a master report scheduling system that establishes best practices.
"As we got deeper into our Siemens Soarian clinical implementation and saw how EHR and CPOE would transform our clinical operations, the need to have a backup strategy in place became clear," said Lee Angelo, Application Supervisor, Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center. "The importance of business continuity is becoming critical across the healthcare industry as there becomes an even greater dependence on electronic health records. The Summit Downtime Reporting System became an easy choice as it was not only a secure solution but turn-key and a flexible strategy for PVHMC. The Summit Healthcare team was responsive, timely and knowledgeable as we worked to meet our aggressive October 2012 go live.”
"Summit Healthcare is delighted to expand our work by helping PVHMC establish their business continuity strategy to address system and network downtime," said Ted Rossi, CEO, Summit Healthcare. "Business continuity is becoming essential for hospitals and we are pleased to offer a secure, cost effective model to the Siemens customer base.”
