So Far So Good: Training Residents on Soarian CPOE

I work as an Independent Consultant with an urban academic hospital in Washington, DC.  This hospital went live with Siemens Soarian January 2013, except for the CPOE.  They planned to go-live with CPOE by end of June 2013.

At this institution, the Residents place the orders and manage their patients under the supervision of the attending physicians, who are their principal mentors. The Residents are under microscopic eyes- they must comply in order to complete their residence. The Residents seek for ways to demonstrate their willingness to comply, so getting them trained in CPOE becomes an avenue for them to shine.

When it was time to provide training to the physicians, the first approach was to notify the Internal Medicine Residents (who were the first to go live) of the upcoming training. The training was to be done through Learning Management System (LMS), followed by practice lab.

The Residents stated that they were too busy to complete the required training at first. However, when a letter was sent out by the CMO, the Residents completed CPOE training at a record time.

One thing I will say is that they were very cooperative and made suggestions to the order sets and to some of the form details. They were willing to wait for future enhancements (that is, if they would still be around by then). I was really impressed with their willingness to help.

Could it be that the resident’s cooperation is due to their youth and exposure to many gadgets of this era, such as, iPad, iPod, and smart phones?
